Course Overview
In this webinar, Suzanne Marmo, Ph.D., LCSW, APHSW-C and Patricia Carl-Stannard MSW, LCSW detail the implementation of an MSW level elective entitled "Life, Loss and Transition," taught in an online asynchronous class. Two professors with over 45 years of combined practice experience in palliative care, hospice, grief, and loss work will present their experiences with course development and connection with students in the online educational environment. Using their depth of experience, they review the different types of loss and grief (not just related to death) and how social workers can use the methods they use in the classroom to provide safe space online, establish presence amidst emotionally-charged content, and deliver sensitive content in a fully online setting will be presented, They discuss strategies such as using peer cafes and self-care plans to help students deal with issues around grief and loss learning.

About the Instructors
Suzanne Marmo, Ph.D., LCSW, APHSW-C is an Assistant Professor of Social Work at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut. She has been a Licensed Clinical Social Worker since 2001 and has clinical expertise in medical and oncology social work, hospice, palliative care and working with older adults. She is a member of the educational committee of Social Work Hospice and Palliative Care Network and helps to coordinate the Sacred Heart University Interprofessional Palliative Care Committee. She has co-developed and teaches a graduate-level course entitled Life, Loss & Transition to social work students and serves as a mentor to new palliative care social workers. Her research interests include job satisfaction of hospice and palliative care social workers, interdisciplinary collaboration, social justice and equity in palliative care and the role of social work in hospice, palliative care, and health care organizations.
